20 hand-picked spots

"Here are the places I'd take a close friend who loves history, quiet temples, and the kind of food you can only find if you know where to look."

Spot 01Shrine · Hidden gem
Kifune Shrine
貴船神社 — Kibune, Kyoto
Tucked into a cedar-lined valley north of Kyoto, Kifune is one of Japan's oldest shrines. In autumn the lanterns glow against red maple leaves; in summer the riverbed restaurants set their tables directly in the cool mountain stream.
6am – 8pm Eizan Railway to Kibuneguchi Best in autumn

Local tip: Arrive before 8am on weekdays to have the stone lantern path almost entirely to yourself.

Spot 02Food · Local market
Nishiki Market — the back section
錦市場(奥) — Nakagyo, Kyoto
Everyone visits Nishiki Market. Almost nobody walks past the tourist-facing stalls into the quieter back half, where local vendors have sold pickles, tofu, and dried fish to Kyoto households for generations.
9am – 5pm 5 min from Karasuma Oike

Local tip: Try the yuba (tofu skin) fresh from the small shop two-thirds of the way down on the left.
